On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin, Mayor Michael, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman, and a slew of cyclists participated in a ceremony to inaugurate the tunnel's 2.1-kilometer-long length.
Jerusalem was once a popular tourist attraction because of its rich history. Elkin stated that, in addition to its historic treasures, modern tourism is also integrated into the city of Jerusalem. "The opening of this tunnel is another aspect of the growth of Jerusalem. The tunnel transforms the city into an attractive destination for tourists of all types of audience in Israel as well as around the world."
Elkin's ministry, which was also in charge of the project together in conjunction with Jerusalem Municipality, stated that his ministry "invests hundreds and millions of shekels every year in all aspects of Jerusalem’s tourism industry and is involved in developing exciting attractions and ventures that connect the magnificent historical history of our capital city with the future." I encourage all cyclists to come and take a ride along the contemporary, well-maintained road which overlooks Old Jerusalem.
The project was funded by the Elkin's Ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry. It also included the budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The work was done by the Jerusalem Development Authority.
"The Kerem Tunnel project is the central instrument for achieving the idea to change the concept of transportation throughout Jerusalem," Elkin emphasized. "The new tunnel will connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path. It will connect with the various cycling routes that exist within the city. They will be laid throughout the city's numerous areas. The goal is to encourage cyclists in Jerusalem.
The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s in order to move the main sewer line toward the Sorek purification plant.

To make the tunnel usable to the public all year round the work includes road construction as well as the installing blowers.
